John Tapia Urquiza has been the creative director for "dialogues"—a college alumni and fashion industry publication sponsored by the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising—since 1999. Born and raised in Northeast Los Angeles, Urquiza has worked as an advertising art director and designer for 18 years. His experience includes working at marketing firms, including a stint at one of the nation's top five independent Spanish-language advertising agencies. His array of clientele and projects range from Asia to Europe, but he is most proud of his work with nonprofit organizations and the public projects in his native Los Angeles.

Urquiza has been a design educator for eight years. He has written several articles on branding and design and lectures on design and production issues for designers regularly.

After 20 years, Urquiza has returned to exhibiting. In those years, he amassed a collection of work ranging from Polaroids and large-format impressionistic landscapes to abstract and emotional nudes, as well as documentary street photography. In his early photographic career, he assisted photographers in the architectural, fashion, celebrity and commercial industries. He moved on from commercial photography after mastering the technical secrets of light and camera to study design. Today he divides his time between teaching, graphic design and fine art photography.
